Play dual n-back online in a clean, distraction-free space. Follow a square and a spoken letter, then recognize when either repeats from a few steps earlier. Start straight away, with no account or download.
Dual n-back is a working-memory task with two independent sequences: positions and sounds. The “n” is how many steps back you compare. In 1-back, compare with the previous round; in 2-back, compare with two rounds earlier.
Watch the square and listen to the letter. By default, press A for a position match and L for an audio match, or use the on-screen buttons. Respond to both when both match, and do nothing when neither matches.
Hear C → H → C? The third letter matches the letter two steps earlier, so that is an audio match. Check the square separately: a sound match does not always mean a position match.
Scores balance the matches you catch with the non-matches you correctly leave alone. Your overall score averages position and audio performance. Compare sessions at the same difficulty and pace; the opening warmup rounds do not count.
Choose 1–9-back, adjust the pace, and review your recent results. Settings and scores stay in this browser, on this device.
